Chapter 5 — The Hunt for Helix Begins

The bunker hummed with the low, ancient vibration of machinery that hadn’t been touched in decades. Dust drifted through the air like ash. The emergency broadcast had saved lives — but it had also painted a target on their backs.
Jake stood over Mercer’s shoulder as the analyst worked, fingers trembling but determined. Emma paced behind them, weapon drawn, eyes flicking to every shadow.
Mercer zoomed in on the map again. “The Sleeper Grid isn’t random. These units aren’t acting independently. They’re following a pattern.”
Jake leaned closer. “What pattern?”
Mercer tapped the screen. “Look.”
The red dots — the Sleeper units — weren’t scattered. They formed a shape. A spiral. A helix.
Emma whispered, “Helix… It’s not just a codename.”
Mercer nodded. “It’s a structure. A command chain. Every Sleeper unit is connected to a central node.
Jake’s jaw tightened. “Where’s the node?”
Mercer hesitated. “That’s the problem. It’s hidden. Masked behind layers of false signals.”
Emma stopped pacing. “Then we peel them back.”
Mercer swallowed. “I can try. But every layer I break triggers a countermeasure. Helix will know we’re digging.”
Jake didn’t hesitate. “Let them know.”
Emma shot him a look. “Jake—”
He turned to her. “We can’t hide forever. Harris already turned MI5 against us. The Sleeper Grid is active. London is a battlefield, and no one knows it.”
Emma exhaled. “So we go loud.”
Jake nodded. “We go loud.”
Mercer took a deep breath and began typing.
Lines of code scrolled across the screen. Encryption barriers fell one by one. The map flickered. Red dots shifted. New ones appeared.
Emma stepped closer. “What’s happening?”
Mercer’s voice shook. “I’m tracing the command signal. It’s bouncing through dozens of relay points. Government servers. Private networks. Military satellites.”
Jake frowned. “Military?”
Mercer nodded. “Helix has access to systems no one should have.”
Emma whispered, “This is bigger than MI5.”
Mercer’s fingers flew across the keyboard. “I’m close. One more layer—”
The screen flashed red.

COUNTERMEASURE ACTIVATED
TRACE DETECTED
LOCATION COMPROMISED
Emma’s eyes widened. “Mercer—”
“I know!”
Jake grabbed his weapon. “How long until they’re here?”
Mercer stared at the screen. “Seconds.”
Jake turned to Emma. “We move.”
Emma nodded. “Where?”
Jake pointed at the map. “To the nearest Sleeper unit.”
Mercer blinked. “What? Why?”
Jake’s voice was cold. “Because if we can’t find Helix… we find someone who answers to them.”
Emma’s eyes hardened. “Interrogate a Sleeper.”
Mercer swallowed. “That’s dangerous. They’re conditioned. They won’t talk.”
Jake holstered his weapon. “Everyone talks.”
Mercer hesitated. “Which unit?”
Jake scanned the map.
One dot pulsed brighter than the others — not red, but orange.
Emma frowned. “What does orange mean?”
Mercer’s voice dropped. “High value Sleeper. Embedded deep. Close to government infrastructure.”
Jake’s jaw clenched. “Where?”
Mercer zoomed in.
The map centred on a location Jake knew too well.
Whitehall.
Emma whispered, “No… no way.”
Mercer nodded. “Unit 88. Active. Embedded inside the Cabinet Office.”
Jake felt the chill run through him.
Helix wasn’t just inside MI5.
They were inside the government.
Emma stepped beside him. “Jake… if we go after a Sleeper in Whitehall, we’ll be walking into the lion’s den.”
Jake turned to her.
“That’s exactly where we need to be.”
Mercer looked terrified. “You’re talking about infiltrating one of the most secure buildings in the country.”
Jake nodded. “Yes.”
Emma holstered her weapon. “Then we plan it properly.”
Jake shook his head.
“No time.”
He grabbed his jacket.
“We move now.”
Emma stared at him. “Jake—”
He looked at both of them.
“Helix made the first move. Now we make ours.”
Mercer swallowed. “And if Unit 88 won’t talk?”
Jake’s voice was ice.
“Then we find someone who will.”
He turned toward the exit tunnel.
“Operation Retribution begins with Whitehall.”
